Why we need a 6-year BS program instead of PhD program in Higher Education?

RT Andrew Ng: Why don’t we make BS a 6 year program and make capstone projects a requirement for each course and guarantee a job to every student that graduates from BS 6 year with a job with they meet T.B.D. requirements of the capstone and apprenticeship.  The capstone provider will be a company that will pay for the tuition if the student completes the objectives successfully.  Thus, smart work with learning quickly instead of cookie-cutter rejects will be the name of the game.

Why not an transdermal patch instead of a smart pill?

They have had the smart pill since 2005 at UC-Berkeley when a student did it for his doctoral thesis.  Why not a Nicorette patch for direct blood stream instead going through the digestive system and then, being released to the blood stream with limited effect.  Also, what about if the person cannot shallow and has to crush the tablet or gel tablet?

My Reaction to Apple’s Smart Speaker Rumor

My first reaction when this story broke on Bloomberg is the following:

  1. What is different about this “smart” speaker that is not found in the Google Home or Amazon’s Echo?  Is it a suite of apps that are integrated with the apps on your iPhone so there is a SpeakerKit extension for the application along with Continuum for shifting control from your iPhone to your “smart” speaker?
  2. The Apple TV Generation 4 has still to pick up steam and reach broad penetration in the market.  Why is APPL going to possibly introduce another item in the living or family room like the Google Home?  Why cannot you do everything with the iPhone, iPad, or iPod along with the Apple Watch?  Don’t you think there is product cannibalism like Steve Jobs wouldn’t have wanted in the past before his death in 2011?
  3. Where’s the NeXT big thing from APPL?  Why don’t they create a new niche in the market?  Why not a better OLED display or hydrogen fuel cell for the whole wearable line of products like iShoe, iJacket, and and iHat?  I feel like referring to the MAD parody of Apple from many years back when I think about how many opportunities they are missing in order to cannibalize their own products.  First, they should research what people do every day and then, figure out the bottlenecks to increase throughput and minimize agitation when doing a task or solving a problem.  Second, they should not follow the Steve Jobs’ mentality of Steve-knows-best and the wish lists of customers are never fulfilled (Google is now following this trend for their future Pixel phones).  Third, I want more applications from Apple that can reduce the number of applications I need to use every day.
  4. Please don’t get me wrong.  I love the Apple ecosystem.  But what about Swift 4.0+?  Where is the team heading now that Chris Lattner is gone to Tesla Motors?  Who will take charge?
  5. The Apple TV Generation 4 is lacking on stellar applications that fully leverage the speech recognition and touch capability.  How about a new game controller from Apple that is better than the Xbox controller along with GPU on the Apple TV that can outperform the Scorpio?  Please do this quickly, Jony Ives, because after Scorpio comes, MSFT will be back in the game (with a Surface Phone, Speaker, and Pad that can play Xbox games using the Qualcomm Snapdragon with a fully-featured Windows 10) and take a lead in the whole ecosystem.
  6. My thoughts on APPL are the following: parameter sweep possible ways to make our lives better and richer (like FB does with social media or Instagram with our photos) and collaborate with game makers like Sega, Nintendo, and others so that people have killer apps.  I could be wrong but brand name will make the platform memorable for decades.

Jony Ives: Please design something quickly before MSFT takes over the home entertainment center along with the portable business with an enterprise-grade suite of products along with partnerships with major software vendors like Adobe and others.

[Book Review; Part 1] Deep Thinking: Where Machine Intelligence Ends and Human Creativity Begins by Garry Kasparov

Deep Blue was intelligent the way your programmable alarm clock is intelligent [3]

IBM Deep Blue – https://flic.kr/p/5KLFki

From my study of the Deep Blue paper [1] released by co-architect Murray Campbell, Deep Blue has the following 19 registers and 19 evaluation tables:

Deep Blue evaluation registers:

  1. Rooks on seventh rank
  2. Bias
  3. Opposing rook behind passed
  4. Mpin and hung
  5. Pinned and simple hung
  6. Hung
  7. Xraying
  8. Pinned and hung
  9. Permanent pin and simple hung
  10. Knight trap
  11. Rook trap
  12. Queen trap
  13. Wasted pawns
  14. Bishop pair
  15. Separated passed
  16. Missing wing
  17. Bishops of opposite colors
  18. Evaluation control
  19. Side to move

In my opinion, this is simply hand-tuned AI with tuning parameters that has no semblance of general artificial intelligence that can transfer its learning between tasks and at the same time,  Deep Blue has an opening book, closing books, and a search algorithm for middle game.  Can it learn chess like a human?  Can it be able to move its attention around the chessboard like a human?  Can it look into the eyes of the opponent?  This is very relevant when playing poker.  Can it scale to arbitrary chess board types (Advanced Chess, Fischer Chess, Chess 3D, Chess by four) like the envisioned General Problem Solver (GPS) by J. C. Shaw [2]?  How quickly does it acquire mastery compared to a human in terms of games processed?  Does it use some sort of the biological equivalent of reinforcement learning by the trial-and-error method?  Can it read the chess books and learn how to play by parsing the notation of exclamation marks and question marks left by the authors of various opening, middle, and endgame books on chess?  Is the game understood well enough that Deep Blue can explain why it made a particular move rather than just combining MCTS with value and policy networks as shown by the black-box architecture of deep learning used by Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo?  While it beat Garry Kasparov, why didn’t we solve the game by understanding each unsupervised heuristic instead creating our own synthetic, approximate evaluation functions?  The source code for Deep Blue is unavailable so I cannot say more about the AI system because this is only black-box analysis.
